Breaking Bourbon: sweet, fruit-forward cherry and raspberry with mature seasoned oak, warm caramel, cinnamon, and sugared walnut on the nose; sweet oak, butterscotch, and candied fruit with subtle mint and tobacco on the palate, balanced despite the lower proof; and a medium finish of mature oak, molasses, brown sugar, and barrel char with mild bitterness. Drinkhacker found the seventeen years showing as dried fruit and polish rather than tannin. Honest note: the proof is low and the price is high, and if you make peace with both this is a well-made, drinkable seventeen-year bourbon — something that barely exists at retail — for the age collector and the Orphan Barrel completist.
