The 10 Year is the Vertical Series into double digits — the 2025 chapter, from the smallest lot yet, at 115.9 proof — and Breaking Bourbon says it can stand toe to toe with Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and best it. Sean Josephs, a sommelier who ran Char No. 4 and Maysville in New York, founded Pinhook in 2010 — a pinhooker buys young horses and sells them trained — and the Vertical Series follows 1,350 MGP barrels selected in 2015 and released one year at a time; it was meant to end at twelve years and Pinhook extended it to sixteen, with about 625 barrels left. The 10 Year is seventy-five barrels of ten-year Indiana-distilled straight bourbon, aged in Kentucky, bottled at 115.9 proof. Breaking Bourbon: brown sugar, nutmeg, salted caramel, fresh-baked cinnamon bread, and browned butter on the nose; baking spice, burnt caramel, charred oak, and vanilla syrup on the palate; and a finish of rye spice, charred oak, leather, and lingering dry spice — 3.5 out of 5. Drinkhacker and Bourbon & Banter both rank it at the top of the series. Honest note: ten-year MGP bourbon at barrel proof from a numbered lot with a documented history is rare, and the lot gets smaller every year — for the vertical collector and the drinker who wants the best chapter.
