The Vertical Series is Pinhook's thirteen-year experiment — 1,350 MGP barrels selected in 2015 and released one year at a time from four years old to sixteen, each vintage bottled at whatever proof shows it best — and the 7 Year is the 2022 chapter at 115 proof. Sean Josephs, a sommelier who ran Char No. 4 and Maysville in New York, founded Pinhook in 2010 — a pinhooker buys young horses and sells them trained — and the Vertical Series is named Bourbon War after the racehorse; the same lot of Indiana-distilled straight bourbon sits in Kentucky and gets pulled from annually, so a full run is the only way to taste one whiskey growing up.
