Redwood Empire The Colonel Armstrong Wheated Bourbon
Colonel Armstrong just launched in June 2026, and it's Redwood Empire's first true wheated bourbon — a four-grain expression built around a genuinely unusual mash bill: 59% corn, 30% wheat, 6% rye, and 5% malted barley, more than double the wheat content of most wheated bourbons on the market. Master Blender Lauren Patz combined the distillery's own Vallejo, California grain-to-glass spirit with hand-selected high-wheat bourbons sourced from Kentucky and Indiana, ranging from 4 to 14 years old, blended across 122 barrels and aged partly in Northern California's cool, foggy climate. The name honors Colonel James Armstrong, a Union Civil War veteran who preserved what's now Armstrong Woods by gifting the land to his daughter for just a dollar, "love, and affection" — coordinates printed right on the bottle lead to the actual 1,400-year-old redwood behind the story. Since this is a brand-new release, no independent reviews exist yet, so these notes come straight from the distillery: ripe stone fruit, honeyed grain, and vanilla, with a nostalgic hint the brand describes as a strawberry jam sandwich, balanced by gentle baking spice and a smooth, integrated oak finish. Bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV), priced around $40.
