Hampden Estate Great House 2021 Rum

Great House 2021 is the third edition of Hampden's annual distillery release — and the first bottled at 55% rather than the 59% of the 2019 and 2020 editions, a change Secret Rum Bar tracked across the series. Great House is co-bottled with Velier in the black bottle with the blue label showing the estate's Georgian great house: each year a marriage of a long-aged, low-ester marque with a younger, high-ester one, blended and bottled at the Trelawny Parish estate that's made rum unchanged since 1753 — wild fermentation lasting up to two weeks in vats that are a two-century-old bacterial micro-habitat, dunder and muck-pit additions, double-retort copper pot stills, tropical aging. The 2021 continues the formula the 2019 and 2020 set — those were 80% OWH, the estate's softest, lowest-ester marque, and 20% Diamond H, a high-ester mark with overripe pineapple and banana — with the proportions and ages adjusted for the year, aged in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 55% ABV with no sugar, color, or additives; check your label for this edition's marques and ages. Drinkhacker, reviewing it alongside The Younger, praised the series for special editions that keep coming. 88 Bamboo calls the early Great Houses an excellent introduction to Hampden without overwhelming the senses: grilled pineapple, banana bread, caramel, brown sugar, and burnt-sugar high notes.
