Charanda aged in a tequila cask is Michoacán meeting Jalisco — and Cascahuín is one of tequila's most respected traditional distilleries. Charanda is Mexico's rum, protected by a Denomination of Origin like Champagne; the Pacheco family has made it in Uruapan, Michoacán, since 1907, at 4,180 feet in the red volcanic soil the Purépecha named the spirit for. This release takes the Single Agricola Caña Criolla — 100% fresh cane juice from the old creole variety, copper-pot distilled — and ages it in a cask that previously held tequila at Cascahuín in El Arenal, Jalisco, the family distillery famed for its traditional, additive-free tequila, bottled at 49% ABV with nothing added. The cask does something no bourbon barrel could: expect the Criolla's fresh cane, lime, and volcanic funk layered with cooked agave, pepper, and the faint minerality of tequila wood, the oak adding vanilla and a golden tint, opening into a savory, spiced, gently rounded palate where cane and agave trade places, finishing long and dry. Honest note: this is a limited, category-bending bottle for the drinker who loves both agricole and tequila — a collector's charanda. Neat, with a drop of water, or in an Old Fashioned that tastes like two Mexican states. Since 1907, through Jalisco's wood.
