Appleton Estate has been making rum in Jamaica's Nassau Valley since 1749 — the oldest continuously operating sugar estate on the island, sitting in a limestone bowl in Cockpit Country where hot days and cool nights drive tropical aging at roughly three times the rate of Scotland. The 12 Year Rare Casks is the house benchmark, and it carries the signature of Joy Spence, who became Master Blender in 1997 as the first woman ever to hold the title anywhere in the spirits industry. She selects from over 200,000 barrels to build a blend of pot and column still rums — every component a true minimum of 12 years, aged in once-used American oak bourbon barrels, fermented with the estate's proprietary wild yeast that produces Appleton's unmistakable orange peel top note. Bottled at 43% ABV with no added sugar, coloring, or flavoring, which is not standard practice in Jamaica. Expect toasted oak, dried fruit, hazelnut, and dark cocoa on the nose with molasses, orange peel, vanilla, and fresh coffee, opening into a full-bodied palate where a surprising hint of pot still funk arrives first before dark chocolate, hazelnut, banana, and punchy oak spice take over — drinking, as one reviewer put it, like something far more concentrated than 43%. The finish is long, bittersweet, and dry, all cocoa and orange zest. At $35 to $45 for real 12-year tropical-aged rum, the value is genuinely extraordinary. Neat, over a cube, or in a serious Rum Old Fashioned.
