Coruba's name is a portmanteau most drinkers never decode: Compagnie Rhumière de Bâle, the Swiss firm founded in 1889 that began importing and blending Jamaican rum, originally as a mixing rum before bartenders adopted it wholesale. It's produced by J. Wray & Nephew — the house whose history traces to 1825 in Kingston — and is generally understood to be a blend of pot and column still Jamaican rum, molasses-based, aged a minimum of two years, bottled at 40% ABV. Worth being straight: the deep mahogany color owes a great deal to added caramel coloring, which is standard for the style but worth knowing.
