Giffard Ginger Of The Indies Premium Liqueur
Giffard's story starts with Émile Giffard, a pharmacist in Angers who invented a steam-distilled peppermint liqueur back in 1885 that proved so popular locally he converted his pharmacy into a full-time distillery. Four generations later, siblings Bruno and Edith Giffard — Émile's great-grandchildren — still run the house from that same Loire Valley town, historically a hub for exotic spices arriving by ship along the river. Ginger of the Indies is part of Giffard's Premium liqueur range, made from a slow maceration of ginger sourced from Asia in neutral alcohol, rounded out with orange blossom water, coriander, and a touch of vanilla. Bottled at 25% ABV, it pours a pale straw yellow and opens with striking ginger and coriander aromatics, softened by vanilla and orange blossom. The palate starts mild and sweet before spicy, peppery ginger heat builds quickly, balanced by citrusy acidity — the brand describes it as playing on contrasts of fire, sweetness, alcohol, and lightness. One independent taster found the ginger genuinely delicious and light-handed, with the vanilla staying subtle rather than dominating. Great warmed into a ginger toddy with honey and lemon, over ice as a simple digestif, or shaken into a ginger-forward cocktail.
