Three Stars is the original Ron del Barrilito — the rum the Fernández family has made at Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamón since 1880, and the reason the brand is a genuine institution in Puerto Rico. The name means "little barrel," from the family's habit of serving guests from small casks. It's a blend aged six to ten years entirely in white oak barrels that previously held Oloroso sherry in Jerez, using the same maceration step that defines the house: a portion of the rum is infused with dried fruits and spices before aging. Bottled at 43% ABV, with the label depicting a cherub offering a barrel to the gods of Olympus. Expect a dark reddish-amber pour with orange marmalade, vanilla, honeysuckle, almond, raisin, banana, and old leather, opening into a honeyed palate of orange zest, toffee, and caramel balanced by dry spicy oak and tea-like tannins, finishing on orange, pine, maple, and a lingering smokiness. Worth noting honestly: independent hydrometer testing has found around 8g/L of residual additives, likely from the sherry casks. Widely considered one of rum's great values, and the classic float on a Piña Colada.
