Rum Fire Jamaican Overproof Rum
Rum Fire is Hampden Estate's answer to Wray & Nephew, originally made for the domestic Jamaican market with a label that looks like it was drawn in Microsoft Paint — and that scrappy presentation is half its cult appeal. Behind it sits one of the most serious distilleries on earth: Hampden Estate in Trelawny, established 1753, where molasses undergoes exceptionally long fermentation with indigenous wild yeasts and dunder from previous distillations, then pot still distillation with no additives, bottled unaged at 63% ABV (126 proof). It sits at Hampden's upper-mid ester level, which means the funk is enormous but not quite at the full glue-and-solvent extreme. Expect crystal-clear rum with an explosive nose of overripe banana, pineapple, mango, papaya, guava, and cane sugar with a grassy vegetal edge, opening into a wave of tropical fruit and buttery weight, finishing extremely long on molasses and licorice. Neat is a genuine experience — reviewers describe it as unapologetic and mule-kicking. Where it really shines is in a daiquiri, Mai Tai, or any tiki drink that needs a rum to punch through everything else.
