Penelope Toasted Series Barrel Finish Rye Whiskey is the rye entry in Penelope's popular Toasted Series, from the Kentucky-based brand founded by Mike Paladini and Danny Polise and now part of MGP's Luxco portfolio. The whiskey is a straight rye made from 95% rye and 5% malted barley, fully matured in charred new American oak, then finished in a second, freshly toasted barrel and bottled at 100 proof.
Toasting rather than charring the finishing barrel caramelizes the wood sugars without the heavy smoke of a char, and Penelope leans into the variation, noting that each toasted barrel comes out a little different. Breaking Bourbon rated the 2024 batch 3.5 out of 5 and called it immediately enjoyable, with barrel char, toasted marshmallow, vanilla, Butterfinger and prickly rye spice on the nose, butterscotch, toffee, tobacco, summer fruit and white pepper on the palate, and a finish of caramel, butterscotch, pear and lingering rye spice, concluding it is a solid choice at the price. The butterscotch-and-spice combination makes it a crowd-pleaser neat or in an Old Fashioned.
