Angostura Aged 7 Year Rum
Angostura is famous for its bitters, but the House has been distilling rum in Trinidad since the 1940s, and the 7 Year is the sweet spot of its core range — the bottle reviewers keep recommending as a first sipping rum. It's a blend of light and heavy molasses rums distilled on Angostura's five-column still in Port of Spain, aged a minimum of seven years in once-used charred ex-bourbon American oak, bottled at 40% ABV. Drinkhacker graded it an A-, calling it engaging and versatile: caramelized banana and flambéed pineapple tempered by milky coffee, toasted coconut, and vanilla cream, finishing on raisin-and-cinnamon oatmeal cookie. Difford's found chocolate, raisin, fudge, and mocha coffee on the nose, with vanilla fudge, dry oak, and cinnamon on a medium-to-full palate and a dry, slightly bitter chocolate finish. The Rum Howler scored it 84.5 and noted the dry, sandalwood-and-tobacco close bodes well for cocktails. Honest range: The Fat Rum Pirate found it easy-going but short on depth, and some tasters detect a touch of heat despite the age. Bourbon & Banter had the practical verdict — it holds up beautifully in an Old Fashioned against Angostura's own bitters, and makes a great bridge for bourbon drinkers exploring rum. Affordable, dry, vanilla-forward, and never sticky. A Cuba Libre with lemon instead of lime is the Howler's own recommendation.
