Angostura No. 1 Cask Collection Rum
The Cask Collection is Angostura's limited-edition series dedicated to rums finished in special casks, and this Third Edition is the rarest of the three: a blend of rums aged up to 22 years, matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks from Spain. The House of Angostura owns the only rum distillery in Trinidad, and its master blenders under John Georges work from molasses through cask selection on the five-column still in Port of Spain; the first Cask Collection edition used French oak ex-Cognac casks and took Gold at the 2017 World Spirits Awards, the second refined the idea, and this one swaps in sherry. Bottled at 40% ABV in a squat decanter, each bottle numbered. Expect a beautiful amber pour with superb clarity and a nose of sherry, leather, citrus, vanilla, and old wood, opening into a silky, complex palate of roasted nuts, rich oats, dried fruit, toasty toffee, dark chocolate, and tobacco with the sherry threaded through, finishing medium, rounded, and oaky. RumRatings tasters call the sherry influence stunning and say it could compete with single malt whisky — elegant, nicely balanced between sweet and dry, smooth as silk. Honest note: a few found the finish shorter than the aroma promises, and longtime fans of the first two editions are split on which they prefer.
