The connection is real: Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, owns GoldenEye — the Jamaican estate where Ian Fleming wrote every James Bond novel — and when the 25th Bond film, No Time to Die, shot on the island, Blackwell Fine Jamaican Rum became the drink of choice on set and on screen. This 007 Limited Edition was released to celebrate it, in a plump, opaque black bottle with the Bond gun-barrel branding, wrapped in a protective mesh sleeve. The rum inside is Blackwell's Jamaican dark rum, distilled, blended, and bottled by J. Wray & Nephew from pot and column still molasses rums, aged in American oak in Jamaica and bottled at 40% ABV — rum runs in the family, since Blackwell's mother's side, the Lindos, once owned Wray & Nephew and Appleton Estate. RumRatings tasters found a strong, pleasant nose of molasses, caramel, clove, nutmeg, ginger, overripe banana, and coconut, opening into a sweet, pleasantly spicy palate that's very smooth for its age — caramel, ripe banana, coconut, and light oak on the finish — with several calling it smooth, fairly priced, and no gimmick. Honest note: it's sweetened and colored in the dark-rum tradition. A great sipper for the Bond fan, a rich mixer for everyone else — try it with ginger beer, Blackwell's own serve — and a bottle that looks the part on a bar cart.
