Equiano Light Rum

Equiano Light is the cocktail rum from the world's first African-Caribbean rum brand — and the Light in the name is a proof of aging, not of flavor. Ian Burrell, the global rum ambassador, built Equiano with Richard Seale of Foursquare in 2020 and named it for Olaudah Equiano, the enslaved African who bought his freedom trading rum and became a leader of the British abolition movement; the company gives 5% of profits to equality projects. Where Original marries two aged molasses rums, Light crosses styles: unaged fresh sugarcane-juice rum from Gray's distillery in Mauritius, shipped to Barbados and blended at Foursquare with Foursquare's own molasses rum aged three years in ex-bourbon oak, bottled at 43% ABV with no additives and a pale straw tint. Paste found vanilla bean and pineapple on the nose with savory, herbal bay-leaf notes, earthiness, and, on a second tasting, more of the fresh, agricole-like grassiness and light funk the cane juice brings.
