La Favorite Coeur de Canne Rhum
La Favorite is one of the last family-owned distilleries in Martinique — founded in 1842 near Fort-de-France, run by the Dormoy family since 1905, still powered by a steam engine and two copper single-column stills, and distilling, aging, and bottling everything on site. Cœur de Canne — heart of the cane — is its white rhum agricole: fresh sugarcane juice from the estate's volcanic-soil fields, fermented, distilled on the copper Creole column, rested in steel, and bottled at 50% ABV with nothing added, under the AOC Martinique. Rum Ratings' drinkers find it surprisingly pungent on the nose, almost overpowering the cut grass the style is known for — reminiscent of a Jamaican with the overripe fruit swapped for grassy herbaceousness — then slightly sweet, very vegetal, unctuous and savory, with a long herbal finish of thyme and mint: really delicious on its own, and absolutely fabulous in a Ti' Punch or as the agricole half of a traditional Mai Tai. Another calls it a super blanc and a good entry at a low price. Expect fresh cane, green herbs, white pepper, and a faint saline edge, with more body than most whites at the proof. Honest note: this is grassy, vegetal cane spirit, and drinkers expecting Bacardí should know — agricole lovers consider it a benchmark value.
