This is Santa Teresa 1796 in its original labeling — the Ron Antiguo de Solera in the tall classic bottle with the hand-dipped red wax that Inu A Kena called lovely and well done. Hacienda Santa Teresa was founded in 1796 in the Aragua Valley of Venezuela, growing cocoa, coffee, and cane, and it's the country's oldest rum producer, still run by the Vollmer family; 1796 was created in 1996 for the estate's bicentennial. It's molasses rum from three distillates — heavy column, light column, and pot still — aged four to thirty-five years in ex-bourbon casks, then married in a solera in ex-bourbon and ex-cognac oak, bottled at 40% ABV; the label notes rums over fifteen years old, and Drinkhacker reports traces now exceed sixty. Santa Teresa has since simplified the name and bottle, so this is the earlier presentation. The Rum Barrel, no fan of soleras, found it not crazy sweet and fairly well balanced — milk chocolate, vanilla, honey, mango, toffee, cashew, coconut cream, cola, tobacco, and cinnamon, going down easy — one of the better commercial premium Venezuelans.
