Rum Diaries wasn't the only one with a huge smile at UK Rumfest 2018 after tasting this — and Rum Revelations calls the 2006 fantastic. It's Worthy Park's landmark: a twelve-year, cask-strength, single-vintage release from the estate's own warehouse. Worthy Park Estate in the St. Catherine hills of Jamaica has grown cane since 1670 and made rum since the 1740s; it stopped in 1962 amid a postwar glut and, after the Clarke family built a modern distillery in 2005, sold bulk rum to independent bottlers while its own stocks aged — so 2006 is among the very first rum the new distillery made. It's the WPL marque — 100% pot-still rum from estate molasses on the Forsyth double-retort still — distilled in 2006, matured twelve years in ex-bourbon barrels at the distillery, and bottled in 2018 at its cask strength of 56% ABV with no chill filtration and no additives, in a limited run of 8,000 bottles worldwide, 4,000 for the US and Jamaica. Rum Diaries found the mildest hint of peppermint and dark chocolate on the nose — Fry's Mint Chocolate Cream — and summed up the philosophy as no chill filtering, no additions, no bullshit. The Rum Barrel reviewed it as a benchmark of the estate. Expect the Worthy Park banana-and-tropical-fruit signature deepened by twelve tropical years into cocoa, toffee, coconut, and toasted oak with a peppery, oily grip at the proof, finishing very long. Honest note: a collector's release, gone when it's gone. Neat, with a drop of water, slowly. The new distillery's first vintage.
