Ak Zanj 10 Year Old Haitian Dark Rum
Ak Zanj means "with angels" in Haitian Creole — a nod to the share evaporated during aging — and the 10 Year is the middle of the aged range from Berling S.A., one of the oldest rum houses in Haiti. Co-founded in Port-au-Prince in 1862 by Labbé Barbancourt, it's still run by his great-grandson Herbert Barbancourt Linge, one of the most respected names in Haitian rum and clairin. This is cane-juice rum in the agricole tradition: fresh juice from Madame Mueze, a low-yield local sugarcane varietal, spontaneously fermented with wild yeast, distilled on a 60-plus-year-old Creole column still, then aged exclusively in ex-Cognac casks for a full decade, bottled at 43% ABV. Ten years in French oak that once held brandy does a lot: expect toasted vanilla, toffee, banana, and root beer on the nose, opening into honey, dried stone fruit, hazelnut, cinnamon, and a warm cognac-like grape note, with a longer, woodier finish than the 8 Year. The Ultimate Mai Tai blog called both the 8 and 10 quite nice sippers with the 10 a little better — more barrel, more polish, less of the raw clairin edge found in the unaged San Zanj. RumRatings tasters note it's noticeably woodier and more complex than its younger sibling.
