Ak Zanj 8 Year Old Haitian Dark Rum
Ak Zanj means "with angels" in Haitian Creole — a nod to the share the angels take during aging — and the 8 Year is the first age-stated rum in the range from Berling S.A., one of the oldest operating rum houses in Haiti. Co-founded in Port-au-Prince in 1862 by Labbé Barbancourt, it remains family-owned under his great-grandson Herbert Barbancourt Linge, one of the most respected figures in Haitian rum and clairin. This is cane-juice rum in the agricole tradition: fresh juice from Madame Mueze, a low-yield local sugarcane varietal, spontaneously fermented with wild yeast, run through a Creole column still more than 60 years old, then aged exclusively in ex-Cognac casks for eight years and bottled at 43% ABV. Expect a golden pour with vanilla, coconut, toffee, and a hint of root beer on the nose, opening into banana, honey, and stone fruit over an earthy, grassy cane backbone, with a lighter, cleaner finish than the woodier 10 and 15 Year. The Ultimate Mai Tai blog called it a quite nice sipper, and RumRatings tasters note it's less oaky than its older siblings — one found the restrained oak refreshing after a run of pricier bottles. Honest range: fans of raw clairin funk sometimes prefer the unaged San Zanj, and the character here is gentler than the whites.
