The name comes from a fire. In 1932 a blaze tore through the Government Rum Bond in Trinidad, and J.B. Fernandes bought the charred casks that survived — only to discover they held rum barreled in 1919. It was good enough to blend and bottle under that year, the name stuck, and when the House of Angostura acquired Fernandes Distillers in 1973 they kept the tradition alive. Today's 1919 is a molasses rum distilled on Angostura's five-column still in Port of Spain and aged a minimum of eight years in charred ex-bourbon American oak, bottled at 40% ABV. It's built to be smooth, and reviewers agree it delivers: Wine & Spirits called it wonderfully versatile, with vanilla and oak spice mingling with brown sugar, earth, mint, and mango; The Rum Howler scored it 86/100 and praised the citrus spice and grassy tobacco that make it its own rum rather than a younger 1824. Expect vanilla, caramel, coconut, cocoa, and dried fruit on the nose, opening into a soft, almost mellow palate of buttery caramel, honey, nutmeg, cherry, and orange, finishing long and warm on oak.
