Appleton Estate 8 Year Reserve is the bottle that made Joy Spence's name. When she became Master Blender in 1997 — the first woman ever to hold the title anywhere in the spirits industry — her first creation was a special rum for the estate's 250th anniversary, and it was so well received that it went into permanent production. Relaunched in 2020 with a true age statement, it's a blend of pot and column still rums from Jamaica's Nassau Valley, where Appleton has distilled continuously since 1749, every drop aged a minimum of eight years in ex-bourbon American oak in the tropical heat. Bottled at 43% ABV, with no added sugar, coloring, or flavoring. Expect honey, toffee, baked banana, and spicy oak on the nose with desiccated coconut, pineapple, and the estate's signature orange peel, opening into a palate where black pepper, ginger, and oak tannin hit first before toffee, honey, and vanilla mellow it out, finishing on milk chocolate and banana bread.
