Arhumatic Ybissap Rum
Ybissap takes its name from bissap, the hibiscus drink of West Africa and the Caribbean, and it marked a first for Arhumatic: the brand's first rhum arrangé built not on Guadeloupe agricole but on Clairin Vaval, the unaged pure-cane-juice rum from the tiny Vaval micro-distillery in Haiti, distilled in 2021. Rhum arrangé is the centuries-old French Caribbean tradition of macerating rum with fresh fruit, herbs, and spices, and founders Clémence and Thierry Ogez — 15 years running a high-end fruit shop in Lille before launching in 2014 — treat every ingredient as a craft choice. Here the clairin is steeped with hibiscus syrup, whole passion fruit, and frécinette — the small, thin-skinned "Martinique banana," sweeter and more fragrant than the standard fruit — and bottled at 36% ABV in the New Vibrations series made with La Maison du Whisky. The pink-copper color is all hibiscus. Expect a pulpy, creamy nose that opens like a rosé wine — apricot and black grape first, then hibiscus, candied cherry, and exotic fruit as it breathes — with the clairin's grassy, rustic backbone underneath. The palate is delicately rich: floral hibiscus, sour cherry, ripe banana, lychee, and passion fruit, finishing long and fresh on fresh cane juice and geranium honey. Apéritif or digestif, served very cold. Distributed stateside by La Maison & Velier.
