Basil Hayden's Bourbon Whiskey

Basil Hayden is the bourbon for people who don't think they like bourbon — and for people who do but want something gentle. Basil Hayden Sr. was a Maryland Catholic who led a group of settlers into Kentucky in 1785 and distilled a bourbon with an unusually high rye content for the time; in 1992 Booker Noe, Jim Beam's grandson, named the lightest member of his new Small Batch Collection after him, alongside Booker's, Baker's, and Knob Creek. The mash bill is 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley — nearly twice the rye of standard Jim Beam, the same recipe as Old Grand-Dad — aged in new charred oak and bottled at 80 proof, bourbon's legal minimum. Men's Journal calls it an easy drinker with some pep, and says that in that it succeeds: the low proof isn't an accident, it's the point. Expect a light amber pour with caramel, vanilla, and a bright rye-pepper note on the nose, opening into a soft, spicy palate of light oak, honey, dried fruit, and black pepper, finishing short and clean. Honest note: enthusiasts have long wished it were bottled higher — The Whiskey Jug called it good bourbon watered down — and the 10 Year now answers that. But the flagship's gentleness is why it's on more back bars than almost any premium bourbon: a Manhattan that stays smooth, an Old Fashioned for a beginner, or a highball.
