This Guadeloupe 8 Year comes from Distillerie Bellevue in Capesterre on Marie-Galante, the small island south of Guadeloupe whose volcanic soil grows some of the finest sugarcane in the French Caribbean; the distillery began as a sugar factory before turning to rum in the early 20th century. This is cane-juice rum in the agricole tradition, column distilled, distilled in 2016 and bottled from a single cask at 64.3% ABV — RumX's community scores it 8.6. Bedford Park found it stumbled upon a beautiful rum whose combination of column distillation and fresh cane juice produces complexity even at a young age, with beautiful sweet and herbaceous notes. Expect fresh-cut cane, green herbs, and floral sweetness on the nose with light vanilla and honey from the oak, opening into a bright, grassy, oily palate of citrus, pepper, and toasted wood, finishing long and dry.
