Benriach The Smoky Twelve is the peated sibling of the distillery's flagship The Twelve, three-cask matured for at least twelve years in bourbon barrels, sherry casks and Marsala wine casks. Benriach, founded in 1898 near Elgin in Speyside and now owned by Brown-Forman, is one of the few Speyside distilleries that still peats its own malt during a short annual smoke season.
Bottled at 92 proof and non-chill-filtered, The Smoky Twelve shows orange marmalade, smoked vanilla and toasted almond on the nose, then dark chocolate, sultana, brown sugar and soft Highland peat smoke on a creamy palate, finishing dry with cocoa, charred orange and baking spice. The Whiskey Wash scored it a rare 5 out of 5, praising how the smoke unifies rather than dominates. For fans of Talisker or Highland Park who want a Speyside twist, this is the bottle.
