Blood Oath is the annual pact John Rempe makes with bourbon drinkers: every spring since 2015, the Lux Row master distiller blends a set of rare, well-aged Kentucky bourbons, finishes at least one in an unusual cask, bottles 51,000 numbered bottles at 98.6 proof — body temperature — and swears never to reveal the sources. Pact No. 10, the 2024 tenth-anniversary release, is the first with a double finish: three Kentucky straight bourbons — two ryed bourbons and one finished bourbon — where the finished component rested first in Cabernet Franc barrels and then in Merlot barrels, layering two wine influences over the blend. Breaking Bourbon found the two varietals delivering a dynamic and pleasing sip. Bourbon Bossman found oak, smokiness, red fruit, vanilla, caramel, rye spice, and subtle wine on the nose, then red and stone fruit, caramel, vanilla, and rye on the palate, finishing medium with dry oak and sweet red fruit — amazing red fruit and vanilla spice, a fan's verdict, with the honest advice not to overpay. Honest range: The Whiskey DR found it unremarkable for the price, and the Pact series has always divided drinkers who want to know exactly what's in the bottle. That secrecy is the brand.
