Oude Genever is the old style of the Dutch national spirit — "old" meaning the traditional recipe, rich in malt wine, rather than a statement of age — and Boomsma's is one of the few made in the northern province of Friesland, where the family has distilled in Leeuwarden since 1883. Dutch law requires at least 15% malt wine, the pot-distilled grain spirit that gives genever its whiskey-like body; Boomsma uses a high proportion, blending it with pure grain distillates, corn wine, botanicals, and juniper distillate to founder Dirk Boomsma's original principles, then resting it in oak, with no artificial aromatics or coloring.
