Breckenridge is distilled at 9,600 feet — the highest distillery in the world when it opened in 2008 — in the Colorado ski town of the same name. Founder Bryan Nolt built it around Rocky Mountain snowmelt water and a high-rye bourbon recipe, and the distillery grew into one of the largest craft producers in the country; it was bought by Tilray in 2021. The flagship is a blended straight bourbon: Breckenridge's own high-rye distillate — a mash bill around 56% corn, 38% rye, and 6% malted barley — aged at least two years in new charred oak at altitude, married with sourced Kentucky and Indiana straight bourbons of similar recipe, and proofed with mountain water to 86 proof. The thin, dry mountain air pulls water out of the barrel faster than Kentucky humidity does, concentrating the whiskey and its oak in a short time.
