Breckenridge Distillery sits at 9,600 feet in the Rocky Mountains — the world's highest distillery — and its gin is proofed with the same mineral-rich snowmelt that founder Bryan Nolt chose the town for after testing water in a dozen mountain communities. The distillery calls it a fragrant American-style gin, made on a custom-built Vendome copper pot still through a combination of botanical maceration and gin-basket vapor infusion, over a 100% grain neutral spirit, and it's built to carry the same bold, mountain-clean character as the distillery's award-winning bourbon. The Gin Is In found lovely juniper on the nose with traditional gin spice and a hint of citrus opening after a moment, then a more contemporary, botanically complex palate: coriander and cardamom on the tip of the tongue, lemon zest mid-palate with a creamy, floral-tinged spice — black pepper, hibiscus petal — before a more traditional back-palate of piney juniper and bitter orange warming the throat on a moderately long finish. The verdict: a nicely balanced, spice-forward contemporary gin with a bit of juniper, clean and very flavorful, highly recommended in a G&T, and with enough warmth for a bracing Martini that pairs well with olives — a good entry point for Dirty Martini fans exploring gin.
