Brovo Spirits Orange Curacao
BroVo Orange Curaçao was authored by Laurent Lebec of Chicago's Big Star, a bartender who wanted a margarita curaçao with more body than triple sec and more character than the big French brand, and BroVo Spirits of Woodinville, Washington built it to his spec. The base is unusual: a blend of neutral cane spirit, neutral grain spirit and two-year-old French brandy. Three orange peels go in as separate infusions, sweet oranges from California's Central Valley, bitter laraha oranges from Curaçao itself, and Seville oranges from Spain, alongside coriander, clove, hibiscus and vanilla. It is sweetened with a turbinado syrup made from brown sugar to roughly 30% sugar, with a small amount of vegetable glycerin for viscosity, and bottled at 35% ABV with natural color. The result is big and bold, bitter and sweet orange together with spice behind it, and a richer mouthfeel than any clear triple sec. The Beverage Tasting Institute gave it a 92-point gold. It was designed for the Margarita, but it is just as good in a Mai Tai, a Sidecar, or stirred with bourbon, where the brandy in the base and the clove make it read like an old-school curaçao.
