Brugal Extra Viejo Gold Rum
Extra Viejo was Brugal's first premium rum, launched in 1976, and for decades it was the bottle Dominican families kept for occasions. The house was founded in Puerto Plata in 1888 by Andrés Brugal Montaner, who learned rum in Cuba, and is now led by its fifth generation of maestros roneros. The method is Spanish-Caribbean: molasses fermented with a proprietary yeast, double distilled on column stills for a light, elegant spirit, then aged — here for three to eight years, longer than the Añejo — in a combination of ex-bourbon American oak and ex-sherry European oak, the cask access that comes from Brugal's ownership by Edrington, the company behind Macallan. Bottled at 40% ABV in the netted bottle. Expect a golden amber pour with oak, vanilla, dried fruit, and a light nuttiness on the nose, opening into a smooth, medium-bodied palate of caramel, toffee, tobacco, and gentle spice with more depth and dryness than the Añejo, finishing warm and oaky. RumRatings tasters put it above the Añejo and call it good bang for the buck, if not earth-moving; Rum Dood noted the distinct dry, slightly musty oak character that some consider a defining Dominican signature. It's the sweet spot between Brugal's mixing rums and its sherried 1888 — pleasant over a cube, and a genuine upgrade in a Rum Old Fashioned or a Cuba Libre with more character.
