Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2012 is the distillery's unpeated provenance whisky, distilled from barley grown by named farmers on Islay in 2012 and matured on the island in American and European oak. Bruichladdich, the 1881 Victorian distillery on the Rhinns of Islay, prints the farms on the label because it believes barley terroir matters, and this vintage release is the proof.
Bottled at 100 proof, non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, it pours fresh-cut straw and opens overtly floral and fruity: crisp apple, ripe pear, peach and dried apricot with lemon drops, grapefruit and orange zest. As it opens, pipe tobacco, vanilla, barley sugar and caramel wafer emerge, with a distinct marine tang. The finish is all fruit, dried apricot, lemon and kiwi, with a warm-sand coastal note.
