Calumet Farm 16 is sixteen-year Bardstown bourbon that you can still find on a shelf for the price of a decade-younger allocated bottle — Breaking Bourbon's point exactly. Calumet Farm is the Lexington thoroughbred stable behind eight Kentucky Derby winners and two Triple Crowns; the bourbon is Western Spirits' label, drawn from a large private stock of Kentucky straight bourbon that the label says was distilled and aged in Bardstown — which, with a 74% corn, 18% rye, 8% malted barley mash bill, points to Barton 1792. The 16 is the oldest and highest-proof of the Single Rack Black line: nineteen barrels, filled in March 2006, blended in honor of Citation, the 1948 Triple Crown winner, non-chill filtered, and bottled at 106 proof. Bourbon Bossman: cherry, brown sugar, vanilla, baking spice, and barrel char on the nose, a very well-balanced palate, and a sweet, dry, oaky finish — superior to the 14, a solid notch above the 15, worth the hunt. K&L: round and supple, drying and spicy, super for the quality. Breaking Bourbon: the expected dry oak, mustiness, and tannin of old bourbon with molasses, tobacco, and clove, and refreshingly easy to find. Honest note, and Bourbon Culture makes it: Barton distillate peaks younger for some palates, and the 16 leans astringent and oaky for them — a $150 sixteen-year is a fantastic value only if you like old-oak bourbon.
