Catoctin Creek Ragnarok Rye Whiskey Collaboration with GWAR Batch 2022
Catoctin Creek Ragnarök Rye Whiskey is the distillery's collaboration with GWAR, the Richmond, Virginia metal band, and it is a good deal more serious than the artwork suggests. Made from 100% rye by Catoctin Creek in Purcellville, Virginia, the whiskey is aged in new white oak and then finished on sugar maple and cherrywood before bottling at 92 proof.
Drinkhacker gave Ragnarök a B+, noting tobacco, roasted grain, coffee and dried plum on the nose, with the maple and cherry finishing woods adding a butterscotch and Christmas-spice character on the back end. The result is darker and sweeter than Catoctin Creek's flagship Roundstone Rye, which makes it an easy pour neat and a fun base for a boozy Manhattan. As a limited collaboration bottling, it also makes a great gift for the metalhead who appreciates a proper rye.
