San Luis Potosí was one of the most expensive mezcals ever released when it landed in 2024 — and it's the most structurally distinct of Clase Azul's three. The tequila house famous for its hand-painted ceramic decanters built its regional mezcal series around one agave per state: Durango's cenizo, Guerrero's papalote, and here Agave salmiana — the green agave, a massive, slow-growing species native to the high semi-desert of central Mexico — grown at around 6,500 feet by producers in the Estación Ipiña region near the Zacatecas border. Pit-roasted, fermented, and distilled in the traditional way, bottled at 40% ABV in a dark, textured decanter inspired by black clay, hand-carved by Mazahua artisans with a cap made by Wixárika (Huichol) craftspeople. Clase Azul's notes: citrus, herbs, green olive, cooked agave, and clove on the nose, then a rich palate of peanut, brown sugar, honey, wood, chocolate, and ripe fruit. The Liquor Bros call it the fullest-bodied and most savory of the three, with real structural complexity and a long mineral finish. Mezcal Reviews' tasters found it less smoky than the Durango, more smoky than the Guerrero, and less sweet than either — one describing a floral-yet-wet-cement character that keeps unfolding for five to eight minutes after the sip.
