Gin Recipe 01 was the first thing Common Ground Spirits ever made, and it set the template: two botanicals in the name, a California-sourced bill behind them, and a gin built to be versatile rather than showy. Julian Peebles and Tory Brown — tech-industry coworkers turned lifelong friends who shared common ground as men of color in an industry where that was rare — founded the Black-owned craft distillery in Berkeley in 2020 with a mission built into the name: spirits as the thing people find common ground over. The gins are formulated with neighbor Ryan Sutherland of Sutherland Distilling in Livermore, using a layered technique where botanicals macerate and bond first, then a fresh round goes in before redistillation. Basil & Elderflower pairs the sweet, green, peppery aromatics of fresh basil with elderflower's honeyed, floral lift over a classic juniper-coriander-citrus structure, bottled at 45.22% ABV. Expect fresh-torn basil and a soft, honeysuckle-like elderflower perfume on the nose with lemon peel and juniper behind, opening into a bright, herbal palate where the basil reads garden-fresh rather than pesto-heavy, the elderflower keeps it gently sweet, and the juniper holds the line, finishing clean and aromatic.
