Common Ground Black Currant & Thyme Gin
Gin Recipe 02 is the darkest, most savory bottle in the Common Ground range — black currant's tart, wine-like depth against thyme's earthy, resinous herb, over a classic juniper structure. Julian Peebles and Tory Brown, tech-industry coworkers turned lifelong friends, founded the Black-owned craft distillery in Berkeley in 2020 with a mission built into the name: spirits as the thing people find common ground over, and a belief that everyone deserves a level playing field. Every recipe is formulated with neighbor Ryan Sutherland of Sutherland Distilling in Livermore, using a layered technique — botanicals macerate and bond first, then a fresh round goes in before redistillation — and every ingredient comes from California's bounty. Bottled at 45.22% ABV. Expect dark, jammy black currant on the nose with a piney, woodsy thyme note over juniper and coriander, opening into a palate where the currant reads tart and vinous rather than sweet, the thyme adds savory herbal grip, and the juniper and citrus keep it dry and structured, finishing long with a faint peppery warmth. It's the Common Ground for stirred, spirit-forward drinks: a Negroni where the currant plays against Campari, a Martini with a thyme sprig, a gin Old Fashioned, or a Bramble that already tastes like blackcurrant. Honest note: this is the most assertive of the three core recipes — the one for drinkers who want a gin with some shadow to it. Bay Area craft with a conscience, in its moodiest register.
