The Doubleday is named for Abner Doubleday, the Civil War general whom baseball legend long credited with inventing the game in Cooperstown, New York. The bourbon comes from Cooperstown Distillery, founded in October 2013 by longtime restaurateur Gene Marra in downtown Cooperstown, a short walk from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the first distillery in Otsego County. Baseball-shaped decanters are what put the distillery on the map, and this one is a custom Abner Doubleday baseball decanter, a bottle designed to stay on display long after it's empty. The bourbon inside is made from a mash of corn, rye and barley and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). Across its whiskey program Cooperstown works with New York State grain, aged in new charred American oak in a mix of 15, 30 and 53-gallon barrels, and Marra has said he prefers a smaller, hands-on still to large commercial rigs.
