Dictador 20 is the 12's older, warmer sibling — same house, same cane honey, same black bottle, with the oldest rum in the blend reaching two decades. Destilería Colombiana in Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1913 by Don Julio Arango y Ferro, whose ancestor, the Dictador of the name, ran a commercial rum trade in the 18th century, and its rum is almost entirely exported — protective laws keep it out of 98% of Colombia. The 20 is made from fermented virgin sugarcane honey, distilled partly in copper pot stills and partly in column, and aged in ex-bourbon oak in a solera system — 20 is the age of the oldest component, not the youngest — bottled at 40% ABV. Rum Ratings' comparative tasters, sampling it against the 12 and the XOs, found a denser, warmer version of the 12: the coffee receding toward warm spice, heavier wood, cinnamon, chocolate, and cocoa on the nose, then cocoa and spice with only a faint sweetness and dryness prevailing, a pleasantly full, oily texture that reads as properly matured — very recommendable to fans of the dry style. Others found it fruity and smooth with a long, sherry-like finish and a pleasant burn to remind you it's a spirit. The Lone Caner found it attempting a fine balance and toppling only slightly, with no adulteration by hydrometer. Honest note: solera age is a ceiling.
