Don Julio 1942 is tequila's first unicorn — the tall penca-shaped bottle that made añejo a luxury and turned bottle service into a tequila business. In 1942 a young Julio González took a loan to open La Primavera in Atotonilco el Alto, in the Los Altos highlands, and built Mexico's original luxury tequila; the brand reached the US in 1987, and Diageo owns it today, still made at NOM 1449. 1942 was created for Don Julio's sixtieth anniversary in the business: 100% mature highland blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in brick ovens, double-distilled, aged a minimum of two and a half years in ex-bourbon American white oak, and bottled at 40% ABV in the elongated bottle inspired by an agave leaf. 12x75: light amber with slow, viscous legs, butterscotch and caramel on the nose with vanilla, roasted agave, cinnamon, and light oak, then a smooth, noticeably sweet palate of caramelized agave, toffee, dark chocolate, toasted oak, and cinnamon — Wine Enthusiast once called it a stunning añejo.
