El Dorado 12 is the rum that introduced a generation to Demerara — and Inu A Kena's reviewer hoped nobody would read the review so the price wouldn't go up. Demerara Distillers Limited makes it at the last distillery in Guyana, at Plantation Diamond on the Demerara River, where the country's heritage stills were consolidated: the 12 is a blend from the Enmore wooden Coffey still, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still — the oldest working still in the world — and the French Savalle columns, distilled from molasses, tropically aged a minimum of twelve years in ex-bourbon oak, and bottled at 40% ABV. Since 2020 DDL has reformulated the range with the added sugar removed or sharply reduced, to the near-universal delight of enthusiasts — Rum Ratings' drinkers note the new version is drier, with more wood and pepper showing where the old caramel sweetness was. Inu A Kena found the 12 bright, sweet, and flirty next to the drier, oakier 21, an excellent aperitif and a bargain against Bacardi and Havana Club.
