Elijah Craig Beer Barrel Finish is bourbon that went back into its own barrels after they'd held Goose Island Bourbon County Stout — a full-circle finish between Heaven Hill and Chicago's most famous barrel-aged beer. Elijah Craig is named for the Baptist preacher credited with charring the first bourbon barrel in 1789, and Heaven Hill is the largest family-owned distillery in Kentucky. Goose Island has aged its Bourbon County Stout in Heaven Hill barrels for years; for this limited release, launched in 2020, Heaven Hill took barrels back from the brewery after the stout was dumped and refilled them with mature Elijah Craig Small Batch — the 78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley mash bill, eight to twelve years in level-4 char oak — for a finish of several months, bottled at 94 proof. The stout leaves its mark: expect the Small Batch's caramel, peanut brittle, and cherry with a layer of dark chocolate, roasted malt, espresso, molasses, and a faint hoppy bitterness, a heavier, rounder mouthfeel, and a long, sweet, cocoa-and-oak finish. Honest note: beer-barrel finishes are polarizing — stout drinkers and dessert-bourbon fans love it, purists find the malt intrusive — and this one is out of production, so what's on the shelf is what's left.
