Facundo Exquisito Aged Rum
Exquisito is the second-highest bottle in Bacardí's Facundo collection — the four-rum range launched in 2013 and named for Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, who founded the company in Santiago de Cuba in 1862 — and the one Rum Ratings' tasters call a really nice step up from the Eximo. It's a blend of rums aged seven to twenty-three years in ex-bourbon oak, distilled on Bacardí's column stills in Puerto Rico, married, and then given a final month in ex-sherry casks before bottling at 40% ABV in a gold-leafed bottle evoking a 1900s Havana party. Inu A Kena found it a deep mahogany bordering on dark brown, with tropical fruit and melon and oak on the nose and far less astringency than the Eximo. Rum Ratings' drinkers find it much smoother and more complex than the Eximo — one ran a side-by-side experiment and concluded Bacardí is indeed capable of very good rum and trying to shed its bottom-shelf image. The Fat Rum Pirate rated it two stars, finding the 40% proof very conservative for a $100 rum. Honest note: this is a soft, polished, Spanish-style sipper built for cognac drinkers rather than a funky pot-still rum, and priced as a luxury bottle. For a slow neat pour, a cigar, or the bottle that shows what twenty-three-year-old Bacardí stock tastes like with a sherry kiss. Named for freedom, in the founder's name.
