FEW takes its straight rye, made from a mash of 70% rye, 20% corn and 10% malted barley, and proofs it down with a brew of Eight Immortals oolong tea instead of plain water, then bottles it at 93 proof.
Eight Immortals is a Dan Cong oolong from the Phoenix Mountains of Guangdong, prized for its peach, honey and floral character, and that is exactly what the tea layers over FEW's spicy rye. The Whiskey Wash scored it 7 out of 10, noting citrus and black pepper on the nose with spice and brown sugar on the palate and an earthy, tea-driven undertone, calling it solid and worth picking up to explore FEW's experimental side. It makes a striking highball with soda and a lemon twist, and an unexpected Old Fashioned.
