Equipoise is the Calvados-finished Foursquare — Mark XXV of the Exceptional Cask Selection, and the first time Richard Seale reached for apple-brandy casks. Foursquare is the distillery Fred Minnick dubbed the Pappy of rum: the Seale family's operation in St. Philip, Barbados, where Seale has led the fight for unadulterated rum — no sugar, no color, no additives, no filtration — and every drop is distilled, aged, blended, and bottled on the island. Equipoise is a Single Blended Rum, pot and Coffey column distillate, tropically aged fourteen years in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Calvados casks from Normandy, and bottled at 61% ABV in 2024 in limited quantities. Equipoise means balance, and the name is the brief: Calvados is subtler than the Madeira, port, and sherry casks Foursquare usually uses, and the apple brandy's wood lends a gentle orchard-fruit lift rather than a heavy wine-cask stamp. Expect a nose of baked apple, pear, honey, and cinnamon over the house's vanilla, coconut, and toasted oak, opening into a rich, rounded palate where orchard fruit and warm spice weave through caramel, dried fruit, and the signature buttery texture, the proof carrying it all, finishing long with a faint apple-skin dryness.
