Foursquare 2010 is Mark XXI of the Exceptional Cask Selection — the fifth in the distillery's run of twelve-year, ex-bourbon, 60% single-vintage releases, following the 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Foursquare is the distillery Fred Minnick dubbed the Pappy of rum: the Seale family's operation in St. Philip, Barbados, where Richard Seale has led the fight for unadulterated rum — no sugar, no color, no additives, no filtration — and every drop is distilled, aged, blended, and bottled on the island. It's a Single Blended Rum, pot and Coffey column distillate married before the cask, distilled in 2010, tropically aged twelve years in ex-bourbon barrels, and bottled at 60% ABV in 2022 in limited quantities. The vintage series is the purest expression of the house — no finishing cask, just Foursquare's spirit and American oak in the Barbados heat — and each year's release shifts subtly with the balance of pot and column and the fill level of the barrels. Expect the classic one-two of vanilla and toasted oak on the nose with coconut, caramel, and a tropical-fruit ester note, opening into a powerful, peppery palate of dried fruit, ginger, cinnamon, and allspice with the house's signature buttery texture, finishing long with leather and a hint of salinity. Honest note: ECS vintages sell out and climb on the secondary market. Neat, with a drop of water, ideally beside a 2008 or 2009. Twelve years, one year's harvest, nothing added.
