Frey Ranch grows every grain in this bourbon on a 1,500-acre farm in Fallon, Nevada that the Frey family has worked since 1854 — corn, wheat, rye, and barley malted in-house — then distills, ages, and bottles it on the same dirt. Colby Frey, the fifth generation, made Frey Ranch Nevada's first licensed distillery since Prohibition in 2006, distilled the first bourbon in 2015, and released it in 2020 after five years in the high desert. The mashbill is 66.6% dent corn, 11.4% winter rye, 10% winter wheat, and 12% two-row malted barley — a four-grain recipe from a single farm — run through both a continuous still and a pot still, aged in new charred oak through the desert's 40-degree daily temperature swings, and bottled at 90 proof. Breaking Bourbon: sweet citrus over dense oak and candy corn with spearmint and baking spice on the nose; toffee and caramel opening to vanilla, green apple, citrus, and apricot on an approachable, balanced palate; and a finish of dry oak and rye spice against lingering citrus and apricot.
