George Dickel Rye Whisky is the Tennessee brand's take on rye, and while the whisky is distilled at MGP in Indiana from the classic 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill, what makes it a Dickel is what happens next. The rye is chill-charcoal mellowed through sugar maple charcoal, the same Lincoln County Process that defines Dickel's Tennessee whisky, before aging in #4 char barrels and bottling at 90 proof.
That charcoal mellowing smooths the sharp edges of a young Indiana rye and gives it a rounder, sweeter profile. Breaking Bourbon rated it 3 out of 5, describing vanilla, marshmallow, lightly charred wood, fallen leaves and grilled peaches on the nose, creamy spiced rye grain on the palate, and a finish of white pepper, oak and leather with very little heat. The reviewer called it one rye you will be hard pressed not to like and hard to beat for the money. It is a dependable house rye for Manhattans and highballs.
